We provide information and programs to help you achieve a healthy weight through good nutrition and exercise along with the aid of supplementary products. (Please read our disclaimer linked at the footer of this page.) Although we believe that all of these products are good, it is important to remember that you must follow them to achieve positive results, and also that there is more scientific research behind some than others. Also, everyone&#8217;s body is different and, therefore, the product that works best for one user many not be the best for another. Weight loss and fitness take time.</p>
<p>Clearly, exercise is highly important to good health. Every scientific study I have ever read indicates that your risk of any disease decreases with exercise so even when I weighed 104 pounds I exercised every day for about an hour. That is partly why I weighed 104 pounds, but I truly believe that exercise is in and of itself very important. Its relationship to weight loss depends a lot on consistency, effort, and time. Since I like to eat, I prefer to put in the time to to do serious exercise than to drastically cut calories. However, a leisurely 10 minutes walk may not make the difference you want in your weight.</p>
<p>Good nutrition is also extremely important. Basically, if you were to follow a balanced diet with as much natural, unprocessed food as possible, you will probably lose weight. There is enough research to indicated that carbohydrates should mostly be obtained from fruit and vegetables and that gluten should be minimized. A good site for providing basic nutritional information, in my opinion is <a href="www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/myguide-monguide/index-eng.php" target="_blank">www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/myguide-monguide/index-eng.php</a>. For the vast majority of people, that&#8217;s all that is required. However, following those rules consistently is not easy for most of us.</p>
<p>Therefore, I do everything I can to make things easier. I usually follow a commercial diet and exercise program.  They often include assistance with record keeping, getting rid of unhelpful habits, recipes and exercise equipment. I change them every so often to relieve boredom.</p>
<p>Auxiliary weight loss products such as appetite suppressants have worked well for me. Products like whey for building muscle have also worked for me. Scientific data for these products is generally not as extensive as for nutrition and exercise but that doesn&#8217;t mean they don&#8217;t help.</p>
<p>I have also successfully used hypnosis to keep my attitude and motivation up. Hypnosis has worked well for me for other problems such as an intense dislike of trigonometry but that&#8217;s another story.</p>
<p>Some people are helped  greatly by bariatic surgery. However, even with that, the results vary. You still have to eat less, stick to a nutritious diet, and preferably exercise. It&#8217;s an aid, but not a total solution.</p>

<p>The authors of this diet are cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietitian Marie Almon. Arthur Agatston was a cardiologist looking for a way to reduce fat in heart patients that people would be able to stick to. Naturally, the same diet works for anyone who wants to lose weight. He believes that low fat, low calorie diets, are very hard to stick to because dieters are often hungry. Low carbohydrate diets, on the other hand, keep blood sugar more even. Thus less insulin is produced and the sense of hunger is reduced. Insulin leads to fat storing and possibly diabetes although a certain amount of insulin production is required.</p>
<p>I tried this diet with success. I lost three and four pounds respectively in the first 2 weeks but had to significantly increase carbohydrates to maintain concentration. I used fruits to supply the extra carbs rather than starches and refined sugar. That worked better for me. At the end of a month I had lost the weight I needed to. Now I am just aiming at keeping the carbs low but not to eliminate them. That is basically what is suggested in the third phase of The South Beach diet. I would recommend this diet except I would recommend addition more fruits and veggies in the first two weeks if you need to.</p>

It is based on three principles. You need to know the foods that <strong>burn fat</strong>, equally important you need to know the foods that prevent fat burning. Last but not least you must know how to combine these foods. The Diet Solution claims high levels of success. The authors further claim that by following these principles you will avoid the insulin spikes that make your body store fat.</p>
<p>This product supplies lots of inspirational material to keep you on track. You get a daily journal to keep track of your food and exercise, a shopping list, a recipe guide, a quick start which contains general information on the kinds of foods you should be looking for. She suggests that you slowly incorporate her suggestions over time to make the adjustments easier.</p>
<p>Some of her ideas are unquestionably controversial. She suggests drinking raw milk. Where I live, it is illegal to sell raw (unpasteurized) milk but you can feed your family with it if you own your own cow. I actually have owned my own cow, and I did drink raw milk for many years. I greatly preferred it, and it took a long time to get used to homogenized and pasteurized milk when my cow was sold.  I never got sick from it, but it is important to consider that pasteurization kills harmful bacteria.</p>
<p>This diet limits carbohydrates but certainly does not try to eliminate them. It encourages eating fruits and vegetables. Calorie counting is a component of weight loss although she suggests that after some practice you won&#8217;t need to continue this because you will have established suitable patterns of eating. It&#8217;s a fresh new and healthy diet which will generate new enthusiasm to lose weight.</p>

<p>We all know someone – maybe even you – who is overweight despite a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. They don’t snack on fatty foods, bags of chips and candy bars or drink sugar-loaded soft drinks, yet they “gain weight just looking at food!” Sound familiar? It may be an immune system reaction to food.</p>
<p>One of my patients, a beautiful young woman of 30, tall and slim, tells me that before her food sensitivity was diagnosed she weighed 110 pounds more than she does now. And that when she eliminated those foods that she was sensitive to, she lost all her excessive weight. “After having been fat all my life, the weight just fell off me,” she exclaims. This may surprise you, but let me explain why this happens.</p>
<p>When we consume food that we are sensitive to (or in some cases, allergic to, such as a peanut allergy) our immune system gets triggered and reacts. The part of our immune system that reacts to foods, poisons, venoms and heavy metals is called the Th2 side. The side that reacts to viruses, bacteria and parasites is the Th1 side.</p>
<p>To illustrate how this could lead to weight gain, look at a square inch of your skin on your arm. Then imagine getting stung by a bee on that square inch. Within seconds your skin turns red and begins to fill with fluids, swelling several times its normal size and weight. This swelling occurs as a result of specialized cells in the Th2 side of your immune system, whose job it is to neutralize toxins, poisons, venoms and the antigens that result from a foreign body or allergic substance being in your system.</p>
<p>Now imagine that immune reaction is occurring all over your body resulting in generalized swelling and inflammation. Before too long your jeans don’t fit and your bathroom scale is your enemy. Perhaps you’re not fat – perhaps you’re just swollen!<br />
Which foods are the culprits? For my client, it was gluten. From childhood she had undiagnosed celiac disease, a genetic condition that causes sensitivity to gluten, the protein in wheat and other grains. For others it might be dairy, eggs, nuts, chocolate, sugar and soy. The list of food sensitivity culprits is long and frequently includes food you eat often and especially while under stress.</p>
<p>What can you do? I recommend an elimination diet – eliminate the common “allergy” foods listed above for three weeks, then bring them back into your diet one at a time, one day at a time. I will guarantee you that during those three weeks you will lose 8 to 15 pounds. When you eat food you are sensitive to, in addition to having digestive or immune symptoms, the next morning you will have gained 2 or 3 pounds back. Observe which foods your body is sensitive to and eliminate them completely from your diet.</p>

<p>If your wedding date has been set for 14 months in the future, start trying to lose weight as far in advance as possible. <p>We also need to know when to see a doctor. Is there something wrong or are we just aging? Sometimes the answer to that isn&#8217;t clear. Some diseases such as thyroid dysfunction leave people feeling unable to participate fully in life but they don&#8217;t exactly know what the problem is. It also causes weight gain.</p>
<p>One of the things which has helped me to determine solutions to all these fitness issues is that I read about health. Some of the magazines listed above have helped me a great deal. My personal favorite is Prevention.</p>
