In your senior years fitness is just as important as it ever was. Exercise is important in and of itself not just for weight loss. It’s just harder to stay motivated. Many of us have sedentary jobs, and we get used to just sitting at our computers all day. At the end of the day we are tired because of the mental exertion. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily translate into physical exertion.
Fitness is still important. It helps us lose weight, sleep better, look trimmer and move better. I personally believe it improves my memory, and there is lots of evidence that it decreases depression.
There are many ways to stay fit. I think it is best to find a program that works for you and stick with it for a few months. Routine seems to be an important factor in consistancy. After a few months, I start to get bored. Then it is time to change. I think that boredom is probably good because then I do something which exercises a different part of my body.
Group sports works really well for some people although they tend to be seasonal. Going to exercise clubs gets people an opportunity to socialize as well as get fit. Public swimming pools are great if there is one close. But if work demands are high or transportation is limited, videos, personal exercise equipment, and on-line fitness programs are a really good way to stay fit too.
Some on-line fitness programs also include nutrition and weight loss aspects to them. They have a place to log your participation and successes. I find that very helpful, and I usually stay with the program longer. It makes me feel accountable. I also like the flexibility that is becoming a greater part of on-line fitness programs. One size does not fit all. A routine which is too strenuous is very discouraging. There are lots to choose from.
