The South Beach Diet is truly a food lover's diet. It's about living well and loving what you eat. But it's also practical, flexible, easy, and effective. The South Beach Diet plan is divided into three Phases. Phase 1 lasts two weeks and is designed to eliminate cravings and kick-start weight loss. The average dieter loses several pounds during each of these weeks. Phase 2 is intended to produce long-term, steady weight loss. You'll stay in Phase 2 until you reach a healthy weight. Then you'll move to Phase 3, the lifestyle Phase. This is how you'll eat and live 365 days a year — and it's the key to maintaining your new, healthy weight.

The authors of this diet are cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietitian Marie Almon. Arthur Agatston was a cardiologist looking for a way to reduce fat in heart patients that people would be able to stick to. Naturally, the same diet works for anyone who wants to lose weight. He believes that low fat, low calorie diets, are very hard to stick to because dieters are often hungry. Low carbohydrate diets, on the other hand, keep blood sugar more even. Thus less insulin is produced and the sense of hunger is reduced. Insulin leads to fat storing and possibly diabetes although a certain amount of insulin production is required.

I tried this diet with success. I lost three and four pounds respectively in the first 2 weeks but had to significantly increase carbohydrates to maintain concentration. I used fruits to supply the extra carbs rather than starches and refined sugar. That worked better for me. At the end of a month I had lost the weight I needed to. Now I am just aiming at keeping the carbs low but not to eliminate them. That is basically what is suggested in the third phase of The South Beach diet. I would recommend this diet except I would recommend addition more fruits and veggies in the first two weeks if you need to.
