Diet food doesn’t have to be boring, in fact, taste is very important to successs. As kids, my sister and I dreaded every time Mom went on a diet. The food looked bland and was tasteless. As we got older we started making suggestions about the ways food could be cooked that would be just as healthy but look nicer but Mom was convinced that dieting equals suffering. Many people seem to have this idea; in fact, it has only been the last few years that you could find really delicious diet recipes.
Regardless of what diet you are on, there are always ways to jazz it up. Spices are an easy choice. Want an eastern flavor or an Italian taste, go to the spice rack. If you have been depending on fats, sugar and salt to make your food taste yummy, this may take practice. Many times before dieting I would prepare in advance. I would set a start date for when I would actually follow the diet but I would try out recipes and follow some of the food guidelines. Naturally I still ate non diet food but the trial run always seemed to help. In fact over several years I reduced my weight by roughly 35 pounds.
Making your diet rock requires some ingenuity. If you are on a low carb diet and are craving some pasta, try spaghetti, squash or dice up some other vegetable. I once had a recipe for pizza crust made from zucchini. Some low carb sites even have recipes for making cauliflower taste like mashed potatoes. One of my favorite short term diets has apple and ice cream on day three. I found that baking the apple in the microwave first made this taste sinfully delicious.
Grilling both meats and vegetables can make them taste more like fried foods; so can baking. When I was on a low card diet, I once craved French fries so I cooked turnip fries. No, they were not as good, but it stopped my cravings and made me feel like I had a treat.
Fruits can be used to replace sweets. Freeze a banana and puree it instead of eating ice cream. Berries and other fruits can be used to make smoothies or puddings. Brightly colored fruits make a lovely garnish with any dish.
Making food interesting and attractive will help you stick with your diet. Search the web for ideas and use your own imagination to make you diet sizzle.
I picture my plate as an artist canvas. Although, my palate is use to foods with excessive salt and sugar, Nancy, you bring to mind, that there are an array of spices that can be beneficial to my health. To my understanding, fried foods, are out of the picture. Diet food can have good taste, bright colors and make me healthy. To me, this is an eye opener for moms and moms-to-be.
